All is safely gathered in

Courtesy of Tescos at New Milton. Christmas has been purchased and unlike Margot and Jerry it didn’t come in a box, we had to go get it. Now I have to confess that unless shopping is accompanied by fireworks and a large boat sailing away, I find it a chore. I know that supermarkets are a necessary evil for all sorts of reasons, but they are a long way behind my favourite place to be, particularly just before Christmas. This time however I was going to sail serenely through the annual food safari in a state of Zen-like calm.

As we arrived to hear Noddy Holder with flu or someone pretending to be Noddy Holder shouting “It’s Chriiiiiiiiiiismas” through the PA, I took it to be a good sign. Taking off my grumpy old git persona for just a moment, I admit I liked (most) of those old novelty Christmas records that came out to jostle each other for the Christmas number one spot and finish off the Top of the Pops Christmas Day special. I still like to hear them as well as some of the even older stuff like Phil Spector’s Christmas Album. I even like Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen and I’m not ashamed to say it!

This year our Christmas Album is The Muppets Christmas Album. It’s my fault, I heard The Twelve Days of Christmas by the Muppets on Chris Evans’ show last year and mentioned I liked it to my wife. Did you know you can still get it from Amazon? I didn’t but you can get it here Muppets Christmas Together. Now I have two choices, I can act all cynical and be sarcastic or just admit I love it. It is impossible to hear Beaker ‘sing’ in the Twelve Days of Christmas without laughing out loud. It may not be the spirit of Christmas, but it’s pretty close to being a damn good start! I reckon if I ever get to the point where I become too cynical for the Muppets then I have become too cynical full stop. And having just spent way too long on YouTube watching Muppet clips I’m pretty certain I haven’t got there yet! There was an earlier version, sadly without Beaker, but take a few minutes out and watch The Twelve Days of Christmas with the Muppets and John Denver, you know you want to.
